When God Asks For More, Ask For Double

“If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.”  - John 4:10

In John chapter 4, we meet the woman at the well. Without ever knowing her name, we walk away from this story having learned what it truly means to ask God for more.

The woman at the well didn’t know she was talking to the Messiah. All she saw was a man of Jewish decent asking her, a Samaritan woman for water. He stood before her and said, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.” When she realized who He was and that He could give her more, she asked for more.

She asked for more of Him. More of who He was and more of His lineage. Having already heard of the Messiah, who He would be, and where He would come from, she knew at that moment, He was who He said he was. And he could give her exceedingly more than a drink of water from the well.

Having received His words, she took the ‘more’ that He gave her, returned to her town, and told others that the Messiah was here. Because of that, many more went and found Jesus and believed His word.

Jesus didn’t necessarily need anything she had to offer. However, by asking her for one small thing, He gives her the opportunity to receive everlasting life through Him. He gave her more - A spiritual abundance that was used to draw more men to Him.

But it wasn’t until she asked.

The difference between us and the woman at the well is that we already know who Jesus is. But just like her, we struggle to recognize Jesus when He presents himself in our lives. We need to be able to recognize that it’s Him speaking to us through everyday occurrences or recognize His blessings and favor.

We need to recognize how God is saying to us, “I am asking of you, but I am also giving you the opportunity to ask more of me”. More of how I can show up in your life. More of how I can bless you beyond the tangible. More of how I can establish your legacy here on earth and in heaven.

More of my healing. More of my peace. More of my provisions.

More of all these wonderful things…

But we have to be able to recognize the man at the well.

We have to be able to recognize when He’s offering us living water

We have to be able to recognize Him.
