Addressing Teenage Hormones & Skincare

These teenage hormones are a mutha!

I told my son, his stank attitude is what breaks his skin out!

My 14-year-old son is growing into a young man and even young men need a proper skincare routine. Neutrogena has always been my go-to product for skincare. Even as a teen (which was not that long ago), I used Neutrogena products. I purchased a few of my favorite skincare products for my son so he can begin caring for his skin properly and consistently. Showing him how to cleanse, moisturize and protect his skin from the sun gave us an opportunity to spend time together, and one more thing he can remember learning from his AH-mazing mom!

While establishing a simple but effective skincare routine is important, teaching my son to love his skin is even more important. As he maneuvers through these difficult years, I want him to understand it’s normal for our skin to go through changes. Regardless of his skin’s appearance, it doesn’t change who he is on the inside or how supernaturally handsome he truly is! Here are a few things we do to help address those crazy teen hormones while supporting healthy skincare.

1.    Healthy balanced diet with protein, lots of calcium, iron, and healthy fats

Teens need extra nutrients to support bone growth, hormonal changes, brain, organ, and tissue development. Make sure your teen starts their day with a healthy breakfast and drink plenty of water.

2.    Regular exercise

Exercise is extremely important during this time of development. Exercise can positively impact levels of serotonin, a chemical that helps regulate mental health.

Exercise also releases endorphins, which are hormones that are responsible for providing us with feelings of happiness. Regular exercise can improve mood, increase self-esteem, and improve sleep quality.

3.    Using mindfulness to address daily stress

Our teens are under an incredible amount of stress. They are faced with the daily stress of peer pressure, social media, academics, extracurricular activities, learning about relationships, and how the world operates. It can all feel very overwhelming at times. Learning to manage stress is key to managing their mental health. Mindfulness is noticing your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations in the present moment without negative judgment. It can be done through simple breathing exercises that allow your mind to shift gears, focusing on the present moment. Mindfulness has been used to treat depression and has shown to improve cognition, help with the reduction of distractions, reduce anxiety and increase body satisfaction.

favorite skincare products for teens!

Daytime Routine

Cleansers

Neutrogena Deep Clean Facial Cleanser

Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser

These two cleansers work great for combination skin. Lightweight and effective, both cleansers have been effective in removing dirt and grime that seems to always accumulate on my teen’s face without over-drying or leaving a residue.

Moisturize

Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer

My absolute favorite daily moisturizer. My son started using this product after using it myself for several months. Moisturizing daily is extremely important but using a good sunscreen is just as important. When addressing hyperpigmentation and acne scars, wearing sunscreen is key! Without it, exposure to the sun can worsen those issues.

 Nighttime Routine

Exfoliate/Cleanse

Touch Beauty Sonic Facial Brush

Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser

Oil-free Acne Wash Daily Scrub

Teaching my son the importance of exfoliating has added a small but effecting change to his nighttime routine. Depending on his mood, he exfoliates using the Oil-free Acne Scrub or the Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser along with the Touch Beauty Sonic Facial Brush. Adding this step at night has helped rejuvenate his skin from all the daily wear and tear.

Moisturize

Cetaphil Deep Hydration healthy glow daily face cream

After exfoliating, he follows up with this face cream, sealing in the extra moisture that his skin needs.
