“Go Ask Ya’ Daddy”

The word “mama” is hands down the most spoken word in my home. It seems as though every sentence begins with “mama”. I am the nurturer, the magical healer, the cook, the janitor, the hug and kiss giver, bed time maker, meanest of the meanies and everything else in between…and I get it. I am here to meet ALL their needs…

However, it is worrisome, nerve jerking and tiring at times…and when I am about to boil over my go to response for every question is, “Go ask ya’ daddy”. You see, Papa is a very present and active father but for some reason no one ever goes to him first. They will walk right past him, give him a high five, walk through my room and into my bathroom while I’m in the shower and ask me to get them a banana. While cooking one day, Jayceface demanded that I come in the bathroom to wipe his butt. All the while, Papa is unbothered…There must be an unspoken rule amongst my children to ask me for everything…and most times when I re direct them to their father they never go and ask him for what they want. Even knowing that most times his answer will be “yes”.

So, one day I asked JBoogey, “why don’t you ever ask daddy for anything? Do you think he will yell at you? Do you think he will get mad if you bother him? Do you think he’s mean?” His response was simply “no.” So I asked again, “Well why don’t you ask him?”

He looked at me and shrugged his shoulders…What they don’t realize is Papa will give them any and everything they ask for. While his big stature may appear intimidating, he is nothing but a teddy bear. Waiting and willing to give them the world, all they have to do is ask…

The next morning, while doing my devotion, God asked me the same thing…” Why don’t you ask me for everything?” …Why don’t I? Why is it so hard for me to ask God for the things I want the most in life? I am just like my children. When it comes to GOD, my heavenly daddy, I am shy and timid, afraid to ask for what I really want and dream of attaining.

I know Who my God is and the power He holds. I’ve seen the miracles He’s performed in my life, the prayers he has answered and the blessings he has given…So if God has shown himself limitless without me uttering a word, what will happen when I do come to him with my deepest desires? His answer was Matthew 21:22, “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” The same way my children endlessly come to me with their requests, I too should go to God.

Now, every time I redirect a child to Papa or when I find myself deep in thought about my own dreams and aspirations, I am reminded, before going to anyone else, I need to go ask my Daddy…

Have you shared your heart with your heavenly daddy today? Throughout scripture God assures us that he hears every prayer and yearns to know us intimately. In the same way, we have pillow talk with a significant other, sharing our deepest desires and wildest dreams, we should lay on the lap of our father and pour out our hearts to him. Its only through his love for us that we see those dreams come to fruition.
